One CHP officer killed and another injured by drunk driver on Christmas eve
A California Highway Patrol officer has died following a collision on the side of Interstate 880 in Hayward, California.
Reports state that a suspected drunk driver struck the CHP officer’s patrol vehicle.
The officer has been identified as 33-year-old Andrew Camilleri. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
California High Patrol Chief Ernest Sanchez spoke to the press on Christmas morning:
“We come to you with broken hearts and also anger, not just because we’ve lost one of our own,” Sanchez said.
Officer Camirelli and his partner were running radar on the side of the interstate when they were struck by the 22-year-old impaired driver. Police believe that he was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana.
Officer Jonathan Velasquez was also injured, but has since been released from the hospital.
The impaired driver remains in critical condition.
Officer Camilleri had been with CHP for one year and four months.
Please don’t drink and drive this holiday season. Because of this idiot, Camirelli’s wife and three children will be spending Christmas day mourning a father and husband instead of opening presents with him.
