Man Throws Rifle at Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy wounds a man who threw a rifle at him on a traffic stop.
On May 12, 2017 a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop on Deyon Marcus Rivas-Maestas. The deputy, 6-year-veteran Brad Proulx, made his initial approach on the passenger side of the SUV. Rivas-Maestas motions that he can not roll down the window so the deputy turns and attempts to walk to the drivers side of the vehicle.
As soon as Proulx walks around to the driver’s side, Rivas-Maestas attacks him. It appears that he suspect attempted to butt-stroke the deputy, but was unsuccessful after Proulx quickly drew his service pistol and fired one shot. The shot struck the suspect in the arm.
The wounded suspect takes off running to the front of the SUV. Proulx fires one more shot and misses. Rivas-Maestas falls to his knees and surrenders.
It turns out that the rifle wasn’t even loaded. Proulx was cleared in the shooting and Rivas-Maestas was charged with first-degree assault of a peace officer.
