Man Beats Salt Lake City Police Officer With His Own Baton
A Salt Lake City police officer was injured after suspect Michael Peterson viciously beat him with his own baton.
On September 18, 2017 Salt Lake City police officers were called to massage school after it was reported that a man was harassing employees. Officer responded to the scene and confronted 39-year-old Michael Peterson. Peterson attempted to walk away from the scene and pretend like officers weren’t even there.
After realizing the officers weren’t going to let him just stroll off, he starts cursing at them. When cursing at officers didn’t make them go away, Peterson attempted to steal a Jeep. Officer Gregory Lovell deployed his Taser, which didn’t make a good connection. The Taser only agitated the suspect even more.
Peterson steps out of the Jeep and starts attacking officer Lovell. He wrestles the officers baton away and starts beating him with his own baton. Lt. Andrew Oblad arrived on scene and ordered Peterson to stop.
Peterson runs at Lt. Oblad with the baton. The Lt. fires 10 shots, killing the suspect.
Lovell was treated at a local hospital for a broken ankle and nose from where the suspect had beat him with the aluminum baton. Reports state that Lt. Oblad had been planning to retire, this afternoon was supposed to be his last shift.
