Grand Rapids Police Shootout With 18 Year Old Malik Carey
Grand Rapids Police officers get into a gunfight with an 18-year-old suspect.
On May 30, 2017 Grand Rapids Police were assisting a school officer with truancy checks. Officer Benjamin Hawkins spotted 18-year-old Malik Carey sitting in the back of a parked car. Grand Rapids police officers were informed earlier that day that Carey was violating his probation.
Officer Hawkins and Officer Tony Gamez made the initial approach to the parked vehicle to speak with Carey. Carey gave out a false name and date of birth to the officers. Officer David Lilly arrived on scene as Hawkins was confirming the suspect’s identity.
The officers move in to make an arrest when Carey reaches into his waistband for a gun. The officers retreat and return fire.
Hawkins managed to get off five shots before the officers on scene ended the threat. Carey was struck twice by police. One round hit him in the temple and the other hit him in the left arm. No officers were injured during the shooting.
Carey was on probation following a 2015 incident where he fired a gun at several people inside of a car. His criminal history dated back to 2010 and included charges of second-degree home invasion, aggravated assault, breaking and entering and resisting and opposing police.
All officers involved in the shooting were cleared.
